Human Animal Interactions
Human Animal Interactions

There’s something deeply healing about the presence of an animal. Their calm, nonjudgmental nature can help us feel grounded, safe, and connected—especially when it’s hard to find the right words. In therapy, animals can gently support emotional regulation, build trust, and create a sense of comfort that helps deepen the healing process.

At Healing Horizon Therapies, I thoughtfully incorporate Human–Animal Interactions  into trauma-informed therapy. This isn’t just about having a dog in the room or being in an arena with horses—it’s about intentionally using the human–animal bond as part of a supportive, co-regulating relationship. For clients working through anxiety, trauma, attachment wounds, or emotional overwhelm, the presence of an animal can reduce shame, soften defenses, and help create a felt sense of safety.

Some days, you’ll meet Harvey, my sweet and intuitive pup who may join me in session. Harvey brings a calm, grounding presence into the room. Whether he’s quietly sitting nearby, offering a gentle nuzzle, or simply being his quirky, loving self, Harvey helps many clients—especially kids and teens—feel more at ease and emotionally supported. His presence can be especially powerful during EMDR, inner child work, and attachment-based therapy, where he offers co-regulation, comfort, and connection.

You may also have the opportunity to work alongside Dottie and Sage, two gentle horses. They offer a unique, nonjudgmental presence that can support emotional awareness, confidence-building, boundary-setting, and nervous system regulation. Interacting with horses can be a deeply grounding and experiential way to explore emotions, relationships, and patterns in a safe and supportive environment.

All interactions with Harvey, Dottie, and Sage are always guided by consent and care—for both you and the animals. Their well-being is just as important, and we’ll always check in to make sure their involvement feels supportive and aligned with your needs.
